Mary A. Shook, MD, MPH, MRO, CIME, Board Certified Occupational and Environmental Medicine

Expertise:
Dr. Mary Shook is a Board Certified Occupational Medicine Physician who came to Iowa in 2005. She first worked as Medical Director at Trinity Corporate Health Services in Ft Dodge, IA. In 2009 she moved to the Quad Cities area to provide leadership as a physician in the Clinton Occupational Health facility. She has 21 years of Occupational Medicine experience. She previously worked as a consultant for the United States Postal Service during the difficult times surrounding Anthrax exposure and at National Institutes of Health where the HIV needle stick exposure protocol was developed.Dr. Shook is experienced in all aspects of Occupational Medicine. She has special training in performance of Independent Medical Examinations earning her the title of Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME), and experience in the area of psychiatric issues related to workers. She has lectured on Violence in the Workplace, Supervisor Training Relating to Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Radiation Emergencies.
She offers services at the clinic that include:
- Pre-Placement Services: Physical and DOT Examinations, Medical Surveillance, Respiratory Physicals, Drug and Alcohol Testing
- Injury Care: For musculoskeletal conditions, foreign bodies in the eye, chemical exposures and sutures
- Medical Advisory Services: Medical Directorship of EMT's, MRO services, On-Site Consulting and Training; Job Analysis
- Specialty Examinations: including Independent Medical Exams (IME's), Return to Work (RTW), Impairment Ratings, Fitness for Duty (FFD), and Comprehensive Consults
- Wellness/Preventive Services: Vaccinations, Wellness Programs, Health Risk Assessments, Biometric Screening, Environmental Health and Safety and Pandemic Preparedness
Dr. Shook came to the specialty of occupational medicine after family practice and nuclear medicine residency training. She loves the challenges of keeping workers employed in a safe work environment. She has a special place in her heart for firefighter physicals and prides herself on extensive experience applying DOT recommendations to DOT physicals. Her greatest challenge so far, was assisting schizophrenic employees to overcome hurdles involved in continued employment.

- Dr. Shook got her BA in Biology from State University of New York at Albany in Albany, NY
- She got her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC
- She obtained a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD
- She maintains her Board Certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine
- She has been a certified Medical Review Officer since the 1990s
